White Wall Cinema's Socially Distanced Summer Screen presents

DIRECTOR: Alan Parker

STARRING: Matthew Modine & Nicolas Cage.

Based on William Wharton's 1978 novel, Birdy is the product of late great British director Alan Parker. Responsible for a slew of cinema classics including Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments, Angela's Ashes and more, Birdy may well be the director's forgotten classic. A thoughtful tale of the relationship between two working class boys, the introverted bird obsessed Birdy (Matthew Modine) and the outgoing, confident Al Columbato (Nicholas Cage) who grew up together in Philadelphia. Parker's strange but remarkably beautiful film focuses in on both the boys coming of age tales and the post traumatic stress of their stint in Vietnam. Returning home to the U.S. a physically scarred Al must reach out to his mentally shattered best friend Birdy, who has now become so detached from reality that his dreams of flying take precedence over the real world. With it's excellent haunting score by Peter Gabriel, deeply committed performances from it's two young leads, Birdy is an unexpected, unpredictable, darkly ethereal, deeply rewarding, overlooked masterpiece, that more people need to discover.
