One of Hollywood's foremost female directors Kathryn Bigelow has earned a reputation for creating intense dramas about gritty real life scenarios. Her newest offering is no less potent than her previous works such as The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. This time she focuses on the 1967 12th Street Riots in the city of Detroit and the harrowing true life Algiers Street Motel incident. John Boyega of Star Wars fame heads up this ensemble cast who attempt to bring out the awful truth of this infamous incident that speaks to America's culture of racism and police brutality. The events are faithfully played out under the expert directorial hand of Bigelow who masterfully recreates the story of the police raid launched on an unsuspecting group of young African-Americans during the civil unrest with shocking and often horrifying consequences. The film sheds light on one of the most brutal and shameful incidents in U.S. history that has all too often been swept under the rug.
