PART OF THE OUTSIDER SEASON / Wednesdays in June - A season of films focusing on misunderstood or controversial movies by outsider directors.
Boundary breaking 'body shock' director David Cronenberg's (The Fly, Videodrome, Scanners, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Cosmopolis) controversial classic Crash finally returns to the big screen beautifully remastered in 4K. Initially met with outrage and even initial bans in some areas Cronenberg's misunderstood masterpiece (based on the provocative JG Ballard novel) is an exploration of eroticism in a mechanised world. Ad exec James Ballard (James Spader) survives a near fatal auto accident with Dr Helen Remington (Holly Hunter) only to find his sexual desires awakened by the experience leading him into an underground world of car crash fetishism that, in classic Cronenberg style, is both a visceral and literal tale, whilst still oozing with wider world metaphores and subtext. Given the rarely awarded Special Jury Prize 'for originality, for daring and for audacity' at the Canne film festival, Cronenberg's tale of violence, sexuality and chrome may have lost some of it's shock value but it certainly retains all of it's cinematic impact. Even today Crash is a fascinating watch on many levels, not least of all as the last great 'banning' controversy for a new film in Britain.
