NOAH BAUMBACH'S
THE SQUID & THE WHALE
20TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING
DIRECTOR: Noah Baumbach
STARRING: Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg, Owen Kline, William Baldwin & Anna Paquin
Noah Baumbach writer director of Frances Ha, Marriage Story, While We're Young and co-writer of Barbie, The Life Aquatic & Fantastic Mr Fox brings us this fantastically acerbic, clever and dryly funny film (produced jointly with Wes Anderson). Celebrating it's 20th anniversary re-live this critically acclaimed autobiographical look at the divorce of two erudite parents in 1986 Brooklyn.
With college professor Bernard's (Daniels) writing dreams behind him, a familial split and the newly discovered talents of wife Joan (Linney) send the family into disarray for the children Walt (Eisenburg) and Walt (Kline). Directly channeling his own life experiences, Baumbach's film brilliantly and hilariously portrays the reality and uncomfortable humour of family life in turmoil.
With an excellent cast that includes Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo), Laura Linney (The Truman Show), Owen Kline (later to be the director of A24's Funny Pages), Anna Paquin (The Piano), and Jesse Eisenberg (A Real Pain) in a brilliant early role, The Squid & The Whale is one the great independent American features of the 2000s.
