A POP UP CINEMA IN CENTRAL BRIGHTON

SPRING SEASON FROM MAY 17TH  - ON SALE NOW

Following the success of our Socially Distanced Summer, Autumn and Winter seasons we are now proud to present our special Spring season line-up returning from May 17th (as restrictions allow). As ever, we present a series of specially selected film screenings with a strictly limited number of audience members, socially distanced into their own 'bubbles' with carefully thought out hygiene measures so you can enjoy a custom created big screen cinema experience in a Covid safe environment.

For more on our safety measures regarding Covid-19 visit our information page here.

Our programming features a collection of films that reaches further than the usual mediocre selection often associated with pop up cinema events... whether it's a brand new bit of brilliant but overlooked modern cinema, a 1950s Oscar winning classic, a cult 80s horror favourite, a gritty 70s drama, or a surprising piece of international cinema, we have hand picked all our films to make sure every one of our socially distanced events is a worthwhile, unique and memorable experience.

Doors open early for every screening so you can safely get to your seats and purchase food and drink. KEEP CHECKING BACK FOR LISTINGS UPDATES FOR THE SPRING SEASON! Tickets for each screening are not only VERY LIMITED (so we can keep our capacity low for social distancing purposes) but tickets are also cheap starting as low as £6 per person (or sometimes £4 for students!), as such they will go fast, so we suggest grabbing yours ASAP!

PLEASE NOTE: If the government 'roadmap' for releasing restrictions delays the opening then screenings will simply pushed back by the relevant number of days or weeks (keeping the same day of the week as originally scheduled however if you cannot make the new date you will be able to transfer your ticket to a future screening at no additional cost. Please book now and help support our re-opening for 2021!

In our first event of 2021 we pay homage to the magic of the big screen as we allow this surprisingly modern piece of mystery cinema to remind you of all of the joy of those past classic cinematic thrills and spills! Keep your eyes peeled for clues and get tickets NOW!

8PM TUESDAY MAY 18TH

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Cult director Wes Anderson finally had his big breakthrough into the public consciousness with his 2014 masterpiece The Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson's famous fastidious visual flare is complimented by an astonishing all star cast (inc. Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Tilda Swinton and more) in this humorous tale of debonair hotel concierge Gustave M (a raucously funny Ralph Fiennes) framed for murder, and his new lobby boy 'Zero'. Nominated for nine Oscars (winner of four) and eleven Baftas (winner of 3), Grand Budapest is one of the most meticulously designed, beautifully staged films in history, with it's breathtaking attention to detail only being matched by it's anarchic sense of humour and it's soulfully rendered main characters. A true treat on the big screen!

8PM WEDNESDAY MAY 19TH

FINDING VIVIAN MAIER

In 2007 photographer John Maloof would chance upon a vast box of negatives at an auction house/thrift store across the street from his home. After winning the lot and exploring the contents, it would transpire that he had stumbled across the work of complete unknown Vivian Maier, a secretive nanny who documented life on the streets of 50s and 60s Chicago and told no one of her clandestine passion for photography. The bringing to light of her extraordinary worked earned her a posthumous reputation as one of the 20th centuries greatest photographers. Part art exhibit, part detective story, this film showcases this remarkable collection of street photography as well as attempting to follow the breadcrumbs to find out who this astonishingly talented and highly secretive woman was.

8.30PM THURSDAY MAY 20TH

THE WARRIORS

If there ever was a definitive cult classic, The Warriors is it. A reworking of ancient greek mythology transplanted to late 70s New York, The Warriors is a highly stylised urban odyssey of a street gang (back when feathered hair and a brown leather vesta] could still impart menace) who after being falsely accused of killing a rival gang leader must battle their way back from The Bronx to their own territory of Coney Island. What follows is a visually iconic representation of New York and a whole host of cool comic book-esque gangs such The Baseball Furies (who dress in facepaint and baseball uniforms complete with baseball bats), The Lizzies (an all female gang from Union Square), The Boppers (a Harlem gang who sport fedoras and purple satin waistcoats) and more. One of the greatest and most fun cult films of all time.

8PM MONDAY MAY 24TH

 MYSTERY MOVIE MONDAYS

SECRET MOVIE CLUB PRESENTS -

'WHAT DO YOU MEME?'

Our "Secret Movie Club" project takes a movie you most likely haven't seen before (but will instantly love) and keeps the identity of the movie a secret, only revealing the film when the opening credits roll. Set out on a winter's journey with us to find a truly great piece of cinema. Battle the elements and reflect on the untamed great outdoors in this one of a kind masterwork from a truly great director. Civilisation is overrated so get away and learn what it means to survive, as well as one of the most misunderstood icons of the internet. If this sounds confusing, don't worry it isn't just come see a beautifully made truly classic film that deals with the resilience of the human mind, body and spirit overcoming the toughest of frontiers.

7.40PM TUESDAY MAY 25TH

RICHARD JEWELL

Originally to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill (who stayed on as producers) this true life story based on a 1997 Vanity Fair article eventually became the magnificent breakout role for newcomer Paul Walter Houser. Having featured in the likes of I, Tonya, BlacKkKlansman, and Da 5 Bloods, here Hauser gives a captivating performance alongside co-stars Sam Rockwell and Kathy Bates (both on top form) as the security guard who was wrongly accused of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing. Hauser brilliantly portrays the line between loner jobsworth / hero / wrongly accused, as he is hounded by the media and the authorities in the framework of this morally ambiguous real life thriller created by master craftsman director Clint Eastwood

7.50PM WEDNESDAY MAY 26TH

ROSA LUXEMBURG

 WOMEN IN HISTORY WEDNESDAYS

Often referred to as the world's leading feminist filmmaker, Margarethe von Trotta's 1986 classic Rosa Luxemburg charts the true life story and impact of the Polish socialist, Marxist and pacifist who was repeatedly imprisoned from 1905 onwards for her beliefs and railing against the coming advent of World War I. A stunning central performance from Barbara Sukowa, a well known star of the films of Fassbinder, Lars von Trier, David Cronenberg, (and with Trotta on 2012's 'Hannah Arendt') was in this case the recipient of the Best Actress at the Canne film festival. A powerful document about a woman's determination and dedication to her cause, Rosa Luxemburg is a landmark film about the female political voice.

8.20PM THURSDAY MAY 27TH

NACHO LIBRE

From the husband and wife team that brought you Napoleon Dynamite, and the writer of School Of Rock, Nacho Libre's brand of idiosyncratic humour is complimented by it's affectionate depiction of Mexican Lucha Libre culture via the film's surprisingly attractive photography, production design and colour palette. Unlike other productions Nacho Libre properly exploits the natural comedic talents of Jack Black as he tells the tale (based on a true story!) of a Catholic monk who pursues a secret career between the ropes as a masked Luchadore, to earn money and support the kids at the orphanage he works at by day. Wildly funny this eccentric gem is stacked with a combination of brilliant offbeat humour, visual charm & anarchic silliness that make it a modern comedy classic.

8.10PM TUESDAY JUNE 1ST

TWO DAYS ONE NIGHT

Marion Cotillard gives a blistering performance in this undoubted masterpiece by two time Palme d'Or winners Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne. An astonishing feat of humanist storytelling, Oscar winner (for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose) Cotillard (again nominated here) gives a career best performance as a woman who must her convince her colleagues to save her job instead of each accepting a bonus. A timely and powerful story of one woman's quiet determination both the story and Cotillard's masterfully nuanced performance make for a richly layered piece of social realism that is at turns deeply troubling and exceptionally inspiring. Highly recommended.
