White Wall Cinema's Socially Distanced Autumn Screen presents
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 27TH
THE LAST DETAIL (1973)
DIRECTOR: Hal Ashby
STARRING: Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, Randy Quaid, Clifton James, Michael Moriarty and Carol Kane.
Director Hal Ashby (perhaps best known for Harold & Maude and Shampoo) directs the one and only Jack Nicholson in this pre Cuckoo's Nest classic about two Navy Shore Patrol officers who are given the job of escorting a military prisoner (played by a young Randy Quaid) who has just been court-martialled and sentenced to eight years for a trivial crime. Knowing that the young sailor is about head into an extended lock-up the two Shore Patrolmen decide to give him one last hurrah on the way to the brig, resulting in much mischief and mayhem from Nicholson and co. Ashby's compassionate sensibility brings out the nuance of world where young working class boys are not old enough to drink, but are old enough to sign up to fight. A subtle anti-military film and a delicately balanced bittersweet comedy, The Last Detail is one of Nicholson's great roles and one of Ashby's best.
