White Wall Cinema's Socially Distanced Winter Screen presents

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 16TH

 WOMEN IN HISTORY WEDNESDAYS

THE MESSENGER: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC (1999)

DIRECTOR: Luc Besson

STARRING:  Milla Jovovich, John Malkovich, Faye Dunaway and Dustin Hoffman.

(Please note: this is a rescheduling from a previous date, original tickets remain valid).

Luc Besson director of Leon, The Fifth Element, La Femme Nikita and more, tells one of the definitive stories in French history of a teenage girl from a remote village in France who after being the recipient of a 'divine vision' embarks upon a journey to defeat the world's greatest army and liberate France. A lesson in French history and politics that contains actual dialogue from historical transcripts, Besson is also not afraid to push past the literal to create a highly cinematic mood that encapsulates the enormity of this remarkable true story that beggars belief. Despite being one of the few (importantly) French directors to tackle the story Besson still manages to attract a heavyweight international cast that features the likes of John Malkovich, Faye Dunaway and Dustin Hoffman, not to mention Milla Jovovich's supremely dedicated performance as she brings an astonishing intensity to the screen in this sadly overlooked career best. Largely made with practical effects (CGI still being in it's infancy) Besson's stylish grand vision of France's most important female historical figure is both awe inspiring to look at as well as informative and thought provoking in it's fresh perspective on this most astonishing of stories.
