White Wall Cinema's Socially Distanced Autumn Screen presents
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH
DIRECTOR: Joanna Hogg
STARRING: Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton.
A semi-autobiographical story by British director Joanna Hogg about her experiences at film school The Souvenir is a finely balanced delicately observed piece of cinema. The film charts the young adulthood of it's central character Julie (played by Honour Swinton Byrne in her first leading role) and her troubled relationship with boyfriend Anthony (excellently played by Tom Burke) as she navigates the emotionally fraught ups and downs of dating a charismatic, but troubled older man and her family relationship with mother played by Swinton Byrne's own real life mother Tilda Swinton. The Souvenir was named as the best film of 2019 by the BFI's Sight & Sound Magazine (in a poll of 100 international critics) and attracted the executive production of skills of one Martin Scorsese. There is no doubt The Souvenir is a cut above and has quite rightly received rave reviews including praise from Time Out such as '"The Souvenir’ feels like the only film in the world – the only one that matters".
