One of the most beloved documentaries of all time, filmmaker's Albert and David Maysles (The Rolling Stone's Gimme Shelter) capture two of America's great eccentrics in 'Big' & 'Little' Edie Bouvier Beale. The reclusive Aunt and first cousin of U.S. First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis. This once well heeled mother / daughter duo, after a stint in high society in the 20s and 30s have, by the 1970s, retreated to their crumbling mansion in East Hampton (on their Grey Gardens estate) and are now living in increasing isolation and squalor.

When the Maysles brothers arrive, they discover documentary gold. Despite a tangled web of bitterness, regret and toxic co-dependency, not to mention raccoons helping themselves to loaves of bread in the attic, Big and Little Edie emerge as irresistibly charismatic, fiercely independent and endlessly entertaining. As they reminisce about former glories and navigate the rhythms of their extraordinary daily lives, the film reveals two of cinema's most singular personalities. In particular, Little Edie has become an unlikely fashion icon and philosopher queen, her wit, resilience and unmistakable style making for some of documentary cinema's most unforgettable moments.

By turns funny, melancholy and unexpectedly beautiful, Grey Gardens has inspired an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning HBO adaptation starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, as well as a legion of fans worldwide who will gladly dress up as the duo and quote their many memorable utterances. Few documentaries achieve this level of intimacy and character revelation; watching Grey Gardens feels like meeting two wonderfully eccentric friends who will stay with you for life.

*This event is a screening in the outdoor garden space at our usual venue of Wagner Hall, please feel free to bring cushions or blankets to sit on but please no chairs or very large cushions etc. (Limited chair seats are available for those who may experience difficulty sitting on the floor of the garden, these will be located to the rear of the garden so as not to obscure other patrons view. Please e-mail us at info@whitewallcinema.co.uk immediately after purchasing your tickets if you require one of these for mobility reasons so we can reserve you one for you.

 

Doors open at 6.45pm when the bar will be open and 20s/30s music will be playing in the garden, the screening will then take place at sunset in the garden, please do dress appropriately for post sunset viewing even though it is August. Last admission will be 7.45pm after which time the doors will be closed. The screening will go ahead regardless of weather; however if there is a significant risk of rain or disruptive winds the screening will happen inside for safety/comfort reasons.

No hot food or alcohol from outside the premises is allowed. All alcoholic drinks consumed on the premises must be purchased from the bar as per the conditions of the venue's licence.
