Be a part of this special outdoor screening, in the shadow of our very own gothic-revival church tower that looms over our garden, of the truly wonderful 1939 classic screen adaption of The Hunchback of Notre Dame featuring a truly remarkable, sensitive and powerful performance by the great Charles Laughton (Mutiny On The Bounty / Witness for the Prosecution / Spartacus). With every ticket you will receive a free book of your choice from the new special edition Macmillan Collectors Library 'Monsters, Misfits & Ghosts' range that includes Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', Victor Hugo's 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame', and Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' as well as 'The Shadow in The Corner and Other Classic Ghost Stories' featuring tales by the likes of Rudyard Kipling and Charles Dickens.

One of the finest novels ever written, Victor Hugo's (also author of Les Misérables) The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells the story of the deformed social outcast Quasimodo who peacefully resides in the bell tower of the great Parisian cathedral in the year 1492. When his master Chief Justice Frollo becomes obsessed with 'protecting' Paris from new innovations such as the printing press as well as newly arrived immigrants, Frollo becomes obsessed with a young Romani girl, Esmeralda (in the first American screen role for the great Maureen O'Hara - The Quiet Man / How Green Was My Valley / Miracle On 34th Street), leading to a clash of wills between the reclusive Quasimodo and the powerful magistrate.

A production of astonishing scale, craft and poignancy helmed by directing great William Dieterle, it is however, Charles Laughton's incredible performance as the hunchback bell ringer that lifts this incarnation above all other film versions released before or since. Channelling his own personal struggles with his sexuality, and feelings of being a societal outcast into his immense acting talent, Laughton creates a portrayal of such compassion and beauty it will stay with you long after the credits roll. A must see big screen performance.
