One of the greatest horror directors of all time David Cronenberg creates perhaps the most recognisable feature film of his career in this undisputed classic of 80s cinema, The Fly.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest movie remakes of all time Canadian horror legend Cronenberg, responsible for scores of classic films including Scanners, Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Crash, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and Cosmopolis, retools this 1958 Sci Fi Horror classic for the 80s. A sensation upon it's 1986 release, it took $60 million at the box office over it's $9 million budget cementing both Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis as cult cultural icons ahead of their roles in Jurassic Park/Wes Anderson movies and Beetlejuice/Thelma & Louise respectively.

The story centers on obsessed scientist Seth Brundle (Goldblum) who attempts to convince journalist and love interest 'Ronnie' (Davis) that he has found the secret of teleportation, when one day Brundle's experiments go terribly wrong. Given the film's name it won't be much of a surprise what happens from there. What is surprising however, is how entertaining and well executed the film that follows is. Filled with invention (the cinematic kind), Cronenberg's trademark body horror motifs, vivid performances from it's two leads and Academy award winning make-up effects by Chris Walas (also well known for his creation of Gremlins in the movie of the same name and the famous face melting scenes in Raiders of The Lost Ark), it's a defining movie of the era and a ton of gory fun and the perfect way to kick off a weekend of VHS classics.
